Members of the Niagara County Sheriff's Emergency Response Team found a Paddock Ridge Road man dead in his basement after an hours-long standoff Monday afternoon in Pendleton.

Sheriff James Voutour said SWAT team members entered the home shortly after 4:30 p.m. and made the discovery. He apparently died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Voutour said his department received a phone call from the man's girlfriend who told police he was despondent, possibly armed and was thinking about harming himself.

"We tried to make contact with him," Voutour said. "We never did."

The sheriff's office sent out an NY-Alert message around 2:30 p.m. Monday urging residents in the area of Paddock Ridge Road to stay in their homes until further notice.

The area was cordoned off by sheriff's personnel and the emergency response team and an APC were brought into the area.
