Man charged in gas station robberies gets 2 to 7 years in jail

The man accused of robbing the Sunoco Station at TransIt and Robinson roads in Lockport and a gas station across from Niagara County Community College in Sanborn was sentenced Monday.

Danny Merritt, Union Street, faces two and a third years to seven years in prison for his part in the robberies.

Merritt was charged in connection with the May 5 robbery of the Sunoco station at Transit and Robinson roads and the June 26 robbery of the Sanborn Family Mart, Saunders Settlement Road across from Niagara County Community College.

Merritt, 33, of Union Street, Lockport and Glenn L. Helwig, 63, of Garden Street, Lockport were both charged with first-degree robbery and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

On May 5, State Police said a entered the Sunoco Gas Station on the corner of South Transit and Robinson roads and demanded money from the clerk. A knife was threatened but not displayed, troopers reported. 

The man made off with an undetermined amount of money and fled the scene with another suspect who was waiting outside in a vehicle. The clerk was able to provide to responding State Police troopers a description of the suspect and vehicle.

The vehicle was stopped shortly afterwards by Lockport Police and Niagara County Sheriff’s deputies on Lincoln Avenue in the City of Lockport and Merritt and Glenn L. Helwig of Garden Street, Lockport, were taken into custody.

Then on June 26, a Niagara County Sheriff's deputy responding to an armed robbery at a convenience store on Saunders Settlement Road quickly took Merritt into custody after stopping his car on Nash Road.
