Veteran, donations sought for Habitat home

Niagara Gazette — Senior Airman Amanda Jones’s goal of building a house for a veteran in need is still alive. But she does need more help financially.

Jones, a member of the 914th Airlift Wing stationed at the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station, has been working to raise enough money for the house for 18 months now, with varying levels of success. Now she wants to make a concerted push to finalize the funding so she can finally get to work.

“We’re at the Garden Festival in Lewiston this weekend,” she said. “We’re also trying to find some other organizations to help us with fundraisers.”

Jones has been at the fundraising part of her mission since she began, but was making a hard push to reach the $90,000 to $100,000 needed in September. She tried to raise money through a five kilometer run but scheduled it on a busy weekend and only saw donations total $1,500.

Unfortunately for the project, there’s more than just finding money in economically depressed Western New York. While she’s trying to raise money, she’s also looking for someone to take advantage of her mission. There’s a plot of land in Niagara Falls waiting for a veteran and his or her family to step forward and claim it as their own.

Waiting for someone has kept Niagara Area Habitat For Humanity, which Jones is partnering with in her mission, from breaking ground at the site.

“We haven’t broken ground yet because when we finally do find a family, we’d want to make sure to have the correct floor plans to accommodate them,” she said. “It’ll be a custom-built home.”

Who can apply for the home? Basically, a family is required by Habitat For Humanity, which must then be willing to live in Niagara Falls. The family, she said, must include a combat veteran.

Anyone interested in applying for the home can contact Jones by email. She’s set up an address for the campaign at makeithappen914@yahoo.com.

To donate money, either contact her at her email address or send checks made out to “Habitat for Humanity — Veteran Home Build” by mail to Niagara Habitat Veteran House, P.O. Box 932, Niagara Falls, NY 14302.

Do you think cigarette sales to non-Native American customers should be taxed on reservations?

Yes. Items should be taxed like they are everywhere else.
No, the indian reservations are sovereign land and they are selling them on their land.
Not up to me. Native Americans decide the rules on their land.
Don't care. Smoking isn't good for you.
