CITY OF TONAWANDA

Wannabe cop busted by real ones

A City of Tonawanda man who likes to pretend to be a cop was arrested Sunday evening by real police officers.

Police have charged Vincent T. DelPriore, 23, of 94 Harriet St. upper apartment, with a felony charge of impersonating a police officer, concluding an investigation stemming from an incident that happened July 20 at the Young Street Tops Markets.

This is not the first time DelPriore, who is a volunteer firefighter with Delaware Hose Co. No. 2, impersonated an officer in his white 1998 Ford Crown Victoria — which closely resembles the city’s main unmarked traffic vehicle — police said.

“Who knows how many other times we don’t know about this kid did this,” said Lt. Fredric Foels, a police spokesman. “How many other people did he pull this prank on?”

On the afternoon of July 20, DelPriore pulled into a front parking spot at Tops and immediately approached a 21-year-old black male who was waiting in front of the store for his girlfriend and her mother, who were pumping gas before heading back home to Erie, Pa. He refused when asked by DelPriore to empty his pockets.

Police located DelPriore Sunday evening at the Tops on Niagara Street and brought him in for questioning. His girlfriend also was interviewed and said he likes to “act like a cop” by tailgating motorists, getting them to pull over, then laughing when they do.
