WILSON: Lost man is found in woods

Staff Reports

A man accused of stealing a shotgun and a GPS from a family member was found by deputies after apparently getting lost near Roosevelt Beach.

On Thursday, a Youngstown Road man told sheriff’s deputies he received a phone call from a family friend who said the man’s 27-year-old son was in town at a local bar and restaurant trying to sell a 12-gauge shotgun and a Garmin GPS system. The report said these items were stolen.

The gun was valued at $3,000, and the Garmin at $1,200.

The man told deputies that his son has a severe drug problem and possibly took the items after he was told to move out, the report said. Deputies were unable to find the suspect.

Later that day, deputies responded to a Fitch Road home after a woman there reported the suspect had shown up acting strange.

She suspected he may have been under the influence of drugs, the report said.

The suspect reportedly was talking very fast and tried to enter her home uninvited. The woman said she got him to leave and then called 911.

Deputies contacted the man’s father, who said he thought his son might be on Randall Road.

Deputies were still unable to locate the man.

About 3:40 a.m. Friday, deputies were dispatched to the Roosevelt Beach area after a woman and her husband said they could hear a man yelling for help somewhere near the creek or near Noble Drive.

Deputies did not hear anything, but investigated further inside Wilson Tuscarora Park. There, they heard a man’s voice yelling, “Help me,” the report said.

New York State Park Police responded to assist, and an ambulance was put on standby, the report said.

Deputies went down an ATV trail, yelling to the man to keep talking so they would know where to find him. During the conversation, the man identified himself as the suspect in the earlier larceny.

After walking about a half mile, deputies found the man, stuck in an extremely dense thicket, the report said.

The man was reportedly wearing shorts, one sandal and a jacket. He had suffered several minor scrapes in the thicket, the report said.

Deputies were able to get the man out of the thicket and onto the main path.

He was evaluated by the Wilson Volunteer Fire Company, and he signed off treatment, the report said.

The man was transported to the sheriff’s department. He may face charges.
