THINGS TO DO: BoomDays returns to LaSalle Yacht Club

Staff Reports

In the words of Chris Bystrzak, BoomDays is all about putting a little spring in the step of area residents.

“BoomDays is our unique way to say good bye to our winter blues and welcome the advent of spring at the lifting of the Lake Erie Ice Boom,” she said. “BoomDays celebrates the natural, artistic and cultural wealth of our Niagara River and its waterfronts.”

BoomDays will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday at the LaSalle Yacht Club on 68th Street off Buffalo Avenue.

Other BoomDays celebrations in the region will also be held at Dug’s Dive in Buffalo and the Youngstown Yacht Club. Details of all events are posted at www.boomdays.org.

Twenty-two exhibits have been prepared for viewing at the Falls celebration. Music will be presented by Ladies First Jazz, and fireworks over the Niagara River are scheduled for 8:30 p.m.

Included among the exhibits are two special ones — One by the Niagara Falls High School Advanced Placement Chemistry and Environmental Science Interactive Exhibits on Alternative Energy and the other by the City of Niagara Falls on design plans for the LaSalle Waterfront Park (former Century Club site.)

Fort Niagara will provide musket fire to welcome the explorer Cavalier LaSalle and Father Hennepin as they land by canoe to attend the opening ceremony. Mayor Paul Dyster and state Sen. Antoine Thompson will present city and state proclamations.

Event co-sponsors include LaSalle PRIDE, LaSalle Yacht Club, Northtown Automotive Companies, Niagara Tradition Home Brewing, Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper, Niagara Falls Tourism Advisory Committee and the City of Niagara Falls.

Exhibitors include: Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper, Buffalo Audubon Society, LaSalle PRIDE, New York State Parks, Niagara Arts and Cultural Center, Niagara Beautification, Niagara County Medical Reserve Corp, Niagara Block Club Council, Niagara Falls Dept. of Planning, Niagara Falls Fire Dept., Niagara Falls High School Interactive Student Project, Niagara’s Honeymoon Sweets, No Grand Island Tolls, Northtown Automotive Companies, Paths, Peaks and Paddles and Kathi Schifano.

There is no admission charge to the LaSalle Yacht Club “open house” program, but a $5 donation is asked to help support the work of LaSalle PRIDE.
