Three-day Kiwanis Peach Festival opens today

Niagara Gazette — LEWISTON — The ever-popular Lewiston-Kiwanis Peach Festival — the granddaddy of Niagara County’s late- summer outings — will be launched at 5 p.m. today in Academy Park in the village.

Ranked as one of the area’s largest outdoor venues for family fun, the 40 amusement rides are provided by the North American Midway Co., which just completed its two-week commitment at the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto. A spokesman said the ride Ring of Fire is expected to be the big midway attraction this year.

The parade Saturday will begin at 11 a.m. on Fourth Street and proceed east along Center Street to Academy Park. Again this year, it will feature about 100 units including 11 marching bands, majorettes, floats, fire companies, football teams, color guards, precision drill teams and cheerleaders.

Jerald Wolfgang, parade advisory chairman, said the band lineup includes: The Hit Men Brass Band, Victor, N.Y.; Towpath Volunteers Fife & Drum Corps, Macedon, N.Y.; Ghost Riders, Drum & Bugle Corps, Batavia; Mount St. Mary’s Academy All-Girls Marching Band, Kenmore; University of Buffalo Marching Bulls Band, Buffalo; “D” Company City Guard and Gordon Highlanders Pipe Band, Buffalo; MacKenzie Pipe Band, Niagara Falls; Sanborn Fire Co., Town of Lewiston Band; the Niagara Falls High School Wolverines Marching Band. The NY-Penn Judging Association, Amherst, will judge the entries.

Spectators also will have a glimpse of the Peach Queen candidates. The new queen will be crowned during the 8 p.m. Sunday program on the stage in front of the grandstand.

Earlier in the day, The Sunday Dance Company Showcase will be held on stage from noon to 3 p.m. One of the eight dance companies registered for the program will perform on stage every 15 minutes. That same day, the Neptune Ski Club will showcase their skills on the Niagara River at 11 a.m. at the Lewiston Landing site.
