Lew-Port special ed teacher is New York's 2014 Teacher of the Year

A Lewiston-Porter special education teacher has been named New York's 2014 Teacher of the Year.

Ashli Dreher teaches students with developmental and intellectual disabilities at Lewiston-Porter Senior High School.

Education Commissioner John King Jr. and Regents Chancellor Merryl Tisch presented her with the honor in Albany Tuesday, citing her drive to continually improve.

Dreher's principal, Paul Casseri, praises the unique experience she's developed for her students, which focuses both on life skills and academics.

Dreher is in her 18th year of teaching. She says her message for teachers is to aim higher.
