Obesity, aging population among Mount St. Mary's priorities for next few years

Niagara Gazette — Mount St. Mary’s Hospital and Health Center has now posted the results of its Community Health Needs Assessment and its plans to address the priorities.

Starting in late 2012 and continuing through June, the process included a mail survey to community groups and organizations, citizen focus groups including hospital volunteers, review of state and federal health data, and information gained from the Niagara County Health Department’s extensive community health survey which was conducted earlier this year.

Five health need priorities identified for focus for 2013-2015 include:

• Prevention and treatment of heart disease, stroke, and COPD which will be addressed through the hospital’s cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation program, community lipid panel screening, smoking cessation programs, Parish Nurse Program, educational programs, and work by clinical professionals as a New York State Designated Stroke Center and a Certified Chest Pain Center.

Screening for and treatment of cancers which will be addressed through offerings including free mammography, colorectal cancer and prostate cancer screenings, educational programs, and smoking cessation programs.

• Addressing the health concerns of an aging population which will be addressed through the hospital’s Senior Services Initiative which includes the hospital’s involvement in the local Program of All Inclusive Care for the Elderly, involvement in Alzheimer awareness and outreach programs, and educational programs at its Our Lady of Peace Nursing Care Residence.

• Prevention and treatment of diabetes which will be addressed by the hospital’s Certified Diabetes Education programs.  The hospital will continue to provide expertise to inpatients along with a regular series of outpatient and community diabetes education programming.

Prevention and treatment of obesity which will be addressed by a variety of community health programs offered by Mount St. Mary’s including the CHEERS (childhood obesity) program, the HERO (Health Education Raises Opportunities) program.

The Affordable Care Act requires that nonprofit hospitals like Mount St. Mary’s conduct a Community Health Needs Assessment every three years. Comments on the plan are encouraged and copies of the Mount St. Mary’s Program are available on the hospital’s website at www.msmh.org and at the main information desk in the hospital’s main lobby. Copies can also be requested and comments made by calling 298-2146 or writing to Office of Community Relations, Mount St. Mary’s Hospital, 5300 Military Road, Room 735, Lewiston, NY 14092.
