Lewiston Museum hosting big birthday bash on Sunday

Niagara Gazette — The Lewiston Museum is turning 40 years old. What better way is there to celebrate than throwing a birthday party.

A party is exactly what the Historical Association of Lewiston, the museum's operators, had in mind. And they're looking for some help celebrating from children of all ages.

"We started off trying to generate a reason for more people to come to the museum, because we're only open weekends during the summer," Lisa Ohanessian, one of the party's organizers, said. "we realized this is our 40th anniversary, so we're having a kind of 40th birthday party. It's entirely family-friendly."

All of the free fun takes place from 1 to 4 p.m. today at the museum, 469 Plain St., Lewiston.

What'll be available? Several stations will be set up on the museum grounds with interactive learning opportunities, Ohanessian said. For starters, a returning visitor from the association's bicentennial celebration of the War of 1812 will be on-hand to demonstrate how to make rope. And historical reenactors will offer culture shock as they demonstrate how clothing was worn in the past.

There'll also be several gaming and craft opportunities for children, she said.

But none of it would constitute a birthday party without tempting the sweet tooth. Birthday cake is on the menu for 2 p.m. as the celebration kicks into high gear.

For those not looking for cake but still expecting some sweet treats, there will be a bake sale during festivities, as well as an antiques sale if the sweets craved are less tasty and more cultured.

"There's not going to be a lot of stuff, but there will be some nice pieces," Ohanessian said of the antiques available.

Another part of the planned festivities includes blast from not only the distant past but also the association's past. Ohanessian said previous presidents and trustees of the group's 40 years have been invited to attend and are looking forward to taking part.

Local authors will also be on hand to discuss historical importance along with many more entertainment options, she said.
