Members of Lewiston Police Department investigated

Niagara Gazette — Officials in the Town of Lewiston have confirmed the completion of an investigation into an undisclosed “allegation” made against members of the town’s police department.

Contacted by the Niagara Gazette, town representatives would not disclose the specific nature of the investigation on Thursday, saying only that the matter was resolved following consultation with the Niagara County District Attorney’s office and the New York State Police.

“There was an investigation and it is completed,” said town attorney Mark Davis. “At this point, I’m not aware of any further action that needs to be taken.”

Town board members have met in executive session on several occasions in recent months to discuss what has been described in board minutes as “police personnel.” When questioned about the nature of the meetings by the Gazette, Davis confirmed the investigation and that the town consulted with an outside attorney on the matter.

Town board member and current candidate for town supervisor Ernie Palmer said the town received “an allegation” against “some” of its officers. He said after reviewing the allegation, the town, following consultation with Lewiston Police Chief Christopher Salada, the district attorney’s office and the state police, turned it over to a non-involved member of the town’s department for further review. Due to personnel reasons, Palmer said he could not disclose the specific nature of the allegation or the outcome of the investigation.

“At this point, the investigation was turned over to a member of Lewiston police department, obviously who was not involved in the situation, who handled the internal investigation,” Palmer said. “As a result, the town board decided to bring on the services of a police labor relations services attorney. He handled a lot of the back and forth with the police union. An agreement was reached and as of right now, the matter is closed.”

Salada declined comment.
