Weather causing havoc for drainage fixes in Lewiston

Lewiston town engineer Robert Lannon said the cold and snow is keeping the town from moving forward with a plan to fix one of its most long-standing issues.

Lannon previously proposed a step in the right direction at the town's last meeting Jan. 27, saying he'd worked out an arrangement with State Parks to tie a drainage pipe from the housing development near Pletcher and Lower River roads into an existing storm sewer running along Joseph Davis State Park property.

Doing so, Lannon said, requires the town investigate the stability of the state's sewer to ensure it can handle the load.

"The weather's been hindering that from going forward," he said.

Lannon's plan is to send a camera through the sewer to get a visual to determine if any maintenance is needed before connecting. Lannon would then determine if the sewer needs to be cleaned and flushed, which state parks would require Lewiston to complete before allowing a connection, he said.

Complicating the matter could be an issue discovered last week on the Joseph Davis property, where Supervisor Dennis Brochey said a cave-in of the ground may have caused a problem for the sewer pipe.

But Lannon said he isn't aware of the damage and wouldn't know until he's able to inspect the area himself.

"There's a meeting (today) to determine what the situation is," he said. "I don't know what the extent of the problem is right now."
