Patio plans, Tuscarora monument discussed at Lewiston village board meeting

Niagara Gazette — A slight cosmetic change is on the way for one Center Street business.

Emory Simon, owner of the Lewiston Stone House wine bar at 755 Center St., Lewiston, is about to make the south side of his outdoor patio much more comfortable than it has been throughout the summer.

"We're just extending the roof line back," he said following the Lewiston Village Board's approval Monday evening. "This way, we can use it more when the weather is not so nice."

The roof extension, which will not affect any sight lines from Center Street at all, he said, is expected to be installed sometime this fall. And it already has at least one fan.

Mayor Terry Collesano said he believes the patio's new roof would certainly help shield patrons of the bar from the elements during the summer months. He said, as one of those patrons affected by unwanted rain during this year's Lewiston Peach Festival, it'll certainly be welcome.

"I think it's a good thing for the patrons who will be sitting out there," he said. "I was there after the (Peach Festival) parade (Sept. 7) and the rain was blowing in. You couldn't sit on the bar stool without getting wet."

Also approved as part of Simon's plans is an extra set of stairs leading from the outside to the interior bar area, while a handicapped-accessible ramp will be reexamined.

The building the Stone House occupies is a historic one, a former saloon in the village from days long gone. He took steps to try to meet both modern requirements and maintain the general essence of the building he took over.

But with a snowy winter ahead, Simon said the balance he needs to strike may lose out to functionality.

"Being a historic building, it's extremely hard to make it handicap accessible," he said. "But at the same time, I wanted to make sure everybody can enter. Like a soldier who's been injured fighting for our country.
