Conrad chosen to fill vacant Lewiston town board seat

Niagara Gazette — The Lewiston Town Board was made whole Monday with the addition of former Niagara-Wheatfield School Board President William "Bill" Conrad.

Conrad, a Republican, was chosen to fill a month-long vacancy as the fifth member of the council after former member Ernie Palmer stepped away unexpectedly in mid-February.

"I've lived here, I grew up here," he said following his first meeting. "My parents still live here. I just don't like being on the sidelines."

Conrad was among a number of applicants who submitted resumes to the council since advertisements seeking Palmer's replacement were distributed late last month. Candidates were interviewed in executive session last week before the group made its decision.

In addition to serving a single term on the school board, Conrad has also spent the past dozen years as a member of the town's zoning board of appeals. He exits his former board as its chairman, a position the zoning board will likely fill when it meets next month.

Conrad, meanwhile, said he's coming on board with an eye toward the future. He said he's concerned about the image of the governing body in the public. He's also concerned with the number of environmental issues the board is juggling, whether it's a legal battle with Chemical Waste Management over landfill expansion, the possible installation of lagoons by Ohio-based company Quasar or a number of additional issues residents have faced recently.

"I have a lot of concerns," he said. "We need good communication. I want to address the environmental issues and we need to tackle transparency in our government and the budget."

Conrad is a Sanborn resident where he lives with his wife, Lynne Conrad, and their three biological and five fostered and adopted children.
