Lewiston officials closing in on village sign law

Decision time on the Village of Lewiston's proposed sign law is coming soon.

Village planning board Chairman Ken Slagenhoupt said his group has finalized and approved the latest version what would become a restriction on visible outdoor advertising in heavy business areas of the 1-square-mile area.

It's taken working with the business community to make it work, he said.

"We understand their needs," Slagenhoupt said of Lewiston's businesses. "This sign law primarily affects them. So we worked with the chamber of commerce about it. We want to be seen as cooperative. We've engaged the business community as much as we can."

Designed to make stronger challenges against certain types of signs business owners can use to promote their establishments, the law has been on the back burner for months. It was first completed in August, but concerns addressed during a public hearing by various entrepreneurs and residents put Slagenhoupt and his group back at the drawing board.

With a second version complete and supported by the planning board, Slagenhoupt said he's expecting some tweaks before it's finally made law, but that the tweaks likely wouldn't be major.

Making the law reality, though, will require input from the village board, which would ultimately make the final decision. Mayor Terry Collesano said he received the planning board's latest version of the law Monday, hours before the group met for its last meeting of 2013.

So instead of a hasty decision, he asked the board to schedule a special meeting with Slagenhoupt and Zoning Officer Harry Wright at 5 p.m. Monday, Jan. 6. When the meeting is complete, it could mean a new law will set standards for display throughout Lewiston's streets.

In other village news, Trustee Dennis Brochey bid farewell to his fellow board members during his last meeting as a member. Brochey, who won election as Lewiston Town Supervisor last month, will take his new office Jan. 2 during the town's annual reorganization meeting.
