Resident’s voting in Tuesday’s primary elections were stuck traveling to newly designated — and frustratingly inconvenient, in some cases — polling sites, but relief may be on the horizon for the general elections.

VILLAGE OF LEWISTON: GOP holds its ground

The Village of Lewiston Board of Trustees remains Republican through-and-through after Tuesday’s election. GOP incumbents Ron Winkley and Mike Marra were the top two votegetters in a tightly contested four-horse race. Democratic challengers Dave Baird and Bob Giannetti came out on the losing end after an active two months of campaigning. The seats carry four-year terms.

LEWISTON ELECTION: Marra looks for second term

For Mike Marra, 40, a one-term incumbent on the Village of Lewiston Board of Trustees and deputy mayor, it wasn’t exactly a smooth election season. Marra lost in the Republican line in a surprising fashion when David Baird gained more votes at the village caucus — Baird later declined the nomination — but Marra decided to run anyway on the independent line, “Our Village Party.”

LEWISTON ELECTION: Chief wants to keep seat

Ron Winkley, 48, was appointed to a seat on the Village of Lewiston Board of Trustees in November after longtime board member Kenneth Kenney resigned. Winkley retired as Lewiston police chief in June after 26 years on the force and ran a failed bid for Town of Lewiston supervisor before being appointed a trustee. He’s running for re-election to that seat.

VILLAGE OF LEWISTON: No help on grease traps

They’ve asked, cajoled and discussed the matter at great lengths, but members of the Lewiston Board of Trustees have made little progress convincing establishments that serve food in the village to install grease traps. Referring to a letter the village sent to restaurant owners on the issue, Mayor Richard Soluri said, “We haven’t had a lot of response on grease traps. We need some kind of follow up.”

LEWISTON ELECTIONS: Baird wants to get on village board

David Baird, 56, certainly had an eventful campaign for election to the Village of Lewiston Board of Trustees. Baird, a member of the Lewiston Republican Committee, surprised nearly everyone when he won the nomination at the village Republican caucus and later was nominated as a Democrat as well, only to drop the Republican line out of concern for everyone getting a fair shot.

Plans to revive the Village of Lewiston’s languishing but historic Frontier House are being challenged in court — by a company currently building a development just a short walk down Center Street. PRS Press Limited — a subsidiary of Lewiston-based publisher Edwin Mellen Press — has filed court papers in an attempt to repeal several variances vital to the proposal for the Frontier House, owned by Richard Hastings.

He was 75 years old.

Cathy Griebner-Tallady is small in stature and has the kind of soft voice that reminds you of a cooing grandmother. For 23 years, she was also responsible for forcing students to confront what she called their biggest fear — public speaking. A fear, she says, most often was quickly overcome.
