LETTERS: A word of thanks

Niagara Gazette

A word of thanks

St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church deserves a tremendous amount of credit for its hard work in producing the fourth annual Mediterranean Festival held July 11-13 on the church grounds in the Town of Lewiston.

Despite the weekend’s challenging weather conditions, church members outdid themselves In offering a fun-filled family salute to Mediterranean culture — especially its food and music. Special credit goes its pastor, the Rev. Father Paul Solberg, festival Chairman Awni Alsous, Parish Council President Ricco Slaiman, basket auction Coordinator Shelly Fadel and volunteer Coordinator Ann Salhany for their leadership efforts.

As always, Memorial Medical Center volunteers had a lot of fun working alongside parish members and we are deeply grateful to St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church for its commitment to better health and generous support of The Heart Center of Niagara.

Needless to say, we look forward to working with them again next year.

What is wrong with Niagara Falls people?

In the July 13 Gazette, a page one story, “Help (still) wanted,” states that after six months, there are still four positions that have not yet been filled in city government.

One of the comments made is that no one wants to move to Niagara Falls. I have a question to ask: What is wrong with hiring people from Niagara Falls? I am sure there is someone capable of doing one, if not all, of the jobs that have not yet been filled.

It is bad enough that they took three days of taxpayer money to interview people for a position in the assessor’s office knowing darn well they had no intention of hiring anyone outside of City Hall. Don’t let me hear this is not true, because I know it is. I know of two people who were interviewed for the job and then told they are hiring within. What a waste of their time and gas to drive down there thinking they may have a good chance for a good job.

One of the positions opened happens to be the city’s corporation counsel which happens to be an attorney position. What is wrong with you? There is a perfectly good person who is well experienced for this position. It happens to be Robert Restaino. Why not hire him? Restaino is a great person and a wonderful attorney despite the problem he had in the courtroom, which by the way, should have no bearing on this position.

Once again, I want to remind Mayor Paul Dyster that there are very reliable/qualified people in Niagara Falls who can fill these positions.
