LETTERS: Working Green for 27 years

Niagara Gazette

Working Green for 27 years

As we celebrate efforts to “Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle” this Earth Day, we would like to congratulate all our customers for having gone one step further by rethinking landfilling and deciding instead to convert their municipal waste into clean, renewable energy.

It was a bright idea back when our Energy-from-Waste facility was built and it is looking even smarter today. For 27 years, this facility has provided reliable waste disposal services, processing 750,000 tons of waste into enough energy to power 25,000 homes annually. Reducing our reliance on fossil fuels and foreign oil to create renewable energy, the facility has offset 750,000 tons of greenhouse gases from being emitted into the atmosphere. Annually, we also recycle 19,142 tons of metals from being landfilled. So, by reducing the amount of waste going into landfills, Covanta Niagara, L.P., and the surrounding communities work every day to help create a sustainable environment. This is important because Earth Day should be celebrated every day!

Richard K. Peers, facility manager

Keep on giving WNY

How fortunate we are to have generous people in Niagara Falls and Niagara County! Each year when the National Association of Letter Carriers conduct their annual collection of non-perishable food, local food pantries are able to restock their shelves and help hundreds of families in need of emergency food.

Did you know that the Western New York area has led the nation in the number of pounds collected for the past five years?

This has been a tremendous help when we consider that over 5,000 persons in the Niagara Falls area alone live on incomes that are below the U.S. poverty level (under $5,000.)

Over 300 households are assisted each month at Heart & Soul Food Pantry alone.

Will you help again? If each household is able to give a small bag of canned goods or paper products, the accumulated amount will help many families in need. (Please, no glass jars.) Please place your food items near your mail box on May 10.

Sister Barbara Pfohl, director
