HAMILTON: Fare increase unfair to poor

People, I need help, helping you. A taxicab rate increase is, in reality, a tax increase on the poor and elderly. But, you can’t say that your City Council doesn’t give a ‘dime’ about you. They do; but it’s your dime.

HAMILTON: Taking note of the need to read

When I finally publish my first book, it will likely be the story of how Tom Rydell, my 1971 roommate in Radarman-A School, inspired me, a high school dropout, to once again start reading books. He rekindled within me that same love of the written word that my mother had done when we as children sat upon her lap as she read to us from the red set of children’s stories.

HAMILTON: Because Obama is black?

A young African-American man came up to me and declared that if Obama doesn’t win the presidency then it only shows how racist America “still is.” I looked at him, thought for a moment, and then asked him for whom it was that he was voting. As though my question came as a surprise to him, he scrunched his face, cocked his head and blurted out, “Obama!”

HAMILTON: Willie King and the circle's edge

Willie Lewis King died on Nov. 12, 1999 and the Niagara Gazette printed his obituary. They said that the one time fruit-picker turned-machinist loved fishing and sports and that he left behind 28 descendants. Two of them were his twin sons, Bishop Stefan and Tabb Booze. But, like everyone, there is always more to a person’s life than what can be captured in a single obituary, and each has touched many more people than the pages of any newspaper can list. He touched my life, too.

Until we get it, it bears repeating — over and over and over again. I hate to say it, but the 25-year-old black man is believed to be the poster child of all murders.

HAMILTON: Glenda, King centers on community

Did you know that there is a chance that Sen. John McCain could win New York? Given the conditions of Barack Obama’s home state, with sales taxes near 11 percent, more citizens killed on the streets of Chicago than soldiers in Iraq, and a state pension fund that is billions of dollars in debt, some people are wondering about the direction of change that he would bring.

HAMILTON: King, Memories and Mr. Fields

One of the most sincere forms of flattery is imitation, and quite frankly, we don’t do enough of it. We marched — well, some of us — in order to get the city to give employees the day off for Dr. Martin L. King’s birthday, only to have in time the rise of the Niagara Falls 6 and similar cases.

HAMILTON: Is HOPE a pile of ashes?

James Curtis indicated he thought that it was a joke when he put up a hand-printed “whites only” sign. above a water fountain in a Niagara Falls Department of Public Works locker room. While it was likely funny to him at the time, no one is laughing now. He shall suffer dearly for his apparent momentary lapse in judgment. I feel sorry for him. If he was a corporation, it seems that the outcome would have been remarkably different for him.

HAMILTON: The president won’t judge

Adam Schneider doesn’t care who becomes president. One year ago, his baby’s mother suffocated his not-yet, 2-year old son, Trevor. An expert suspected that Shauna Mahoney did so while likely in some state of post-partum depression. She now serves time and hopefully is receiving counseling for that grave act.
