Natural Health:Your best medicine is eating clean

Niagara Gazette — I recommend it every day. Eating clean will not only help you lose weight and feel better, it is likely to add many years to your life. More than any medication or supplement will do for you.

As someone leaves my office following an informative appointment that gives them specific guidelines for eating, I am often asked the question, “where can I go to get something healthy to eat?” For this, I have very few good answers. Even restaurants that have a good salad selection tend to coat them with cheese or salad dressings loaded with unhealthy ingredients. Vegetables are often overcooked and slathered with unhealthy fats. Food tastes best when its not over cooked, prepackaged or lost in creams, sauces or breading.

So for these reasons, I often recommend going to Wegmans. There is no other restaurant or grocery store in Western New York that provide the consumer with such extremely appealing options that will provide and promote health. Clean, single ingredient foods such as chicken and salmon can be pared with roasted vegetables that are fresh, colorful and loaded with nutritional benefits. The cost is minimal and the portion sizes are often enough for two meals. The prepared salad bar has a large selection of creative dishes utilizing whole grains that you may have never before been introduced to. This is the perfect solution for anyone who does not like to cook.

Thankfully, you will find this gem of a store in many locations across the community and I doubt anyone would have to drive more then 20 minutes to get to one. I have relatives living on Long Island who make it a point to go to Wegmans when they visit the area. They cannot get over the healthy selection of prepared foods.

Even the supplement aisle in the healthy section of Wegmans is obviously overseen by someone who knows what he or she is doing when it comes to bioavailability and quality items. I often recommend this area over many popular vitamin stores. I am a fan of one-stop shopping.

Healthy recipes are made public on their website and that they conveniently place everything together to make for fast shopping. There is no excuse why you can’t eat healthy. Healthy foods are very appealing to the eye and walking through this store is one of the most educational class trips when it comes to food preparation and produce display. All I can say is, “Well Done Wegmans!”

Now I am in no way connected to Wegmans and have not been asked to write this article by anyone. This is me, doing what I do, trying to protect and promote health to the local population. What you put in your mouth has an absolute and direct effect on your physical outcome. This is where traditional medicine fails us. Going to your doctor for advice on keeping you healthy is usually not very helpful and most are disappointed. What are you eating? Are you getting benefits from raw fruits and vegetables? Do you get enough omega- 3 fats from walnuts, almonds, flax and chia seeds, olive oil or salmon? A colorful diet that minimizes bread and foods with ingredients lists will go a long way in promoting your health. There is no exercise, medication or supplement that can buffer the blow of an unhealthy diet. Now, with the help of local stores that have prepared healthy selections, you have easy access to better your health.
