Elder says he's still in the city council race

City Council candidate Robert Elder wants your vote Tuesday.

Elder, who had told members of the press that he was no longer actively campaigning in early October, told the Gazette Monday that he has been working to get the word out that he is still hoping to win a seat on the council.

"I've been putting out signs all day," he said.

Elder, who returned from Florida where he was helping take care of an ill sibling last week, is hoping that his absence from the race and previous reports that he was no longer campaigning will not hurt his chances in the seven-way race for three open seats.

"I'm going to continue running," Elder said. "I feel it's for the best. I'm a small fish trying to work my way in."

Elder, a registered Democrat who is one of three endorsed Republicans on the general election ballot, said he and his wife, Brandy, want to do what they can to make the city where they live a better place.

"Me and my wife, we're dedicated and motivated to try to help out the city the best way we can," Elder said.

Elder said that while caring for his sibling may have been damaging to his campaign he left town in the weeks leading up to the election because he knew it was the right thing to do.

"It's family first," Elder said. "if you can't fix your home first how are you supposed to fix a city?"

Elder said that he had told the press that he was thinking about dropping out of the race because of his family situation, but also because he had received phone calls from people he was not willing to name urging him to drop out of the race and threatening to go public with sensitive information about his family if he continued campaigning.

"I thought not to be selfish I would resign," Elder said.

But Elder has since changed his mind and is hoping for the best Tuesday.

"I'm in the race," Elder said.
