Aggressive dog leaves owner in quandary

Niagara County Sheriff's deputies were called to a Creek Road address Saturday afternoon after a dog bit a 36-year-old woman.

The 34-year-old resident said late Friday night said he and his girlfriend's dogs were playing when they became aggressive. While trying to separate the dogs, the woman was bit on the right arm and scratched on her left hand.

The woman went to Mount St. Mary's Hospital where a doctor told her the wound was severe enough for stitches but he did not want to use stitches due to bacteria and instead placed a butterfly bandage on it.

The resident said he'd had the dog, an American staffordshire, for about three weeks and was not sure if it had been vaccinated. Due to several instances where the dog has been aggressive, the resident said he no longer wanted the dog.

The SPCA of Niagara was contacted but they would not pick up the dog due to it being aggressive and advised the resident to take it to a vet to be euthanized.

The resident said he didn't want to have the dog euthanized but didn't want it around his family. The deputy tried to make contact with a rescue group but was unsuccessful. The deputy suggested the man contact an Erie County organization to take the dog.
