The Niagara County Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of a hunter Saturday night in Porter.

Police were called to the area of Youngstown-Wilson and Ransomville roads about 6:30 p.m. Saturday after a man reported he was unable to locate his hunting partner.

The man said he had not heard from his partner in about two hours and said the missing man had a cell phone and a radio but failed to answer either device.

Sheriff's dispatchers using the last signal from the missing hunter's cell phone, determined its location as south of 2408 Youngstown-Wilson Road.

As police were searching that area, the man who had made the report called about 7 p.m. to say he had found the missing hunter in the woods and he appeared dead.

Once again, dispatchers, using GPS technology, directed police to the location, more than 1,000 feet from the road.

Police determined the man was dead and crime scene and investigators were called in, along with the state environmental police.

Investigators are awaiting the results of an autopsy to determine the cause of death but it does not appear that it's suspicious at this time.

The name of the hunter is not being released till the family is notified.
