Attempted ATV theft broken up by alert Wheatfield neighbor

A Shawnee Road man called police about 11:45 p.m. Friday after spotting two men dressed all in black running through a neighbor's backyard.

When deputies investigated, they found a 2008 Polaris Sportsman 500 ATV worth about $5,000 had been pushed from the residence. The suspects had attempted to start the ATV by cutting into the ignition wiring but were unsuccessful.

Deputies further noticed that a 4-foot section of chain-link fence had been cut down to get the ATV out of the yard. It was unclear if anything else was taken as the resident is away on vacation.

The resident was contacted by deputies and informed of the incident. He was told to contact the sheriff's office if he finds anything else missing.
