Man charged with DWI after crashing into two houses in Lockport

Two houses on Walnut Street suffered extensive property damage after they were struck by a fast-moving vehicle over the weekend.

Connor J. Ennis, 21, 693 East Ave., was charged with driving while intoxicated, fourth-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, unsafe lane changing, unreasonable speeding and ignoring an emergency vehicle Saturday.

A Lockport patrol officer reportedly observed a black Mercury Mountaineer heading east on Walnut Street from Cottage Street at a rate much faster than 30 mph. The officer activated his emergency lights to pull the vehicle over.

Instead of slowing down or stopping, the vehicle instead sped up to an estimated 75 mph, the officer reported. When the vehicle escaped the officer's view, other officers were called to assist.

While they searched for the vehicle, a report came in regarding a traffic accident in the 600 block of Walnut Street.

The Mountaineer was found rolled over in the front yard of a Walnut Street home. The driver, identified as Ennis, was removed from the vehicle by city firefighters and was transported to Erie County Medical Center by Mercy Flight.

The yards and porches at 597 and 601 Walnut St. were severely damaged, and a tree in front of 589 Walnut was damaged as well, according to the report.

Open containers of alcohol and a multi-color ceramic pipe, used for smoking marijuana, were found at the accident scene, police said.

While at ECMC, Ennis refused a blood test to determine his blood alcohol content, police said. He was released from the hospital Sunday and is due in Lockport City Court on Wednesday.

The Niagara County Sheriff's Office accident investigation unit responded to the scene for further investigation.
