Deputies assist after autistic man attacks van occupants on Lockport roadway

Niagara County Sheriff's deputies responded to South Transit and Robinson roads about 2 p.m. Wednesday for a report of a van stopped in the middle of the road and a man inside attacking the other occupants.

After a struggle, deputies were able to remove the 28-year-old man from the vehicle and place him in a patrol car.

The driver of the van said the group was from an facility that provided services to autistic individuals and they were returning from an outing.

The driver said the man had begun acting up before getting in the van but had calmed down. While traveling in the van, though, the man became very upset and quickly got out of control. He was sitting in the front seat and broke the driver's glasses. He then began biting another employee before deputies arrived to assist.

The other employee had bite marks on her left hand and right arm, a deputy said, as well a scratch on her lip. She refused medical attention.

A supervisor arrived with another vehicle to transport the man, but deputies noted he was calm and compliant at that point and there was no further need for assistance.
