Child's injuries investigated in Lockport

Niagara Gazette — CITY OF LOCKPORT — A 7-year-old girl suffered facial and upper body injuries in a 2 p.m. incident at a house on Monroe and Allen streets and a man, who was bleeding profusely, had to be forcibly subdued by police.

The girl, who ran to her grandmother's house on Church Street for safety, was taken to Erie County Medical Center for evaluation on Monday. The man was eventually subdued with a Taser.

"It was a pretty dynamic scene for a while," Police Chief Larry Eggert said. The investigation is ongoing and the case is going to the district attorney's office to determine charges.

As Patrolman Kendra DiTullio responded to the emergency call from the mother of the girl, the man who was covered with blood jumped on her car and began pounding on it, according to Eggert.

DiTullio closed the door, backed away and called for assistance.

"We all ran out after him," the chief said. "A bunch of us went over."

The state police heard the report on the radio and the Niagara County Sheriff's Office also responded.

Capt. Anthony Palumbo tried to reason with the man who was covered with blood. "He refused to be reasoned with and Capt. Palumbo had to Taser him, to get him to calm down. "Engert said. "Even after being tasered he was extremely agitated. Three officers were in a snow bank trying to hold him down, so he wouldn't hurt himself."

It was unknown if the child's wounds were defense wounds or scratches. The man had severe cuts on his wrists, but it was not known if the wounds were self-inflicted.

Police did not know if the girl's mother told her to run or if she ran by herself to her grandmother's house.

Names were not released by police.
