Farmer deems 700-lb pig's death suspicious

Niagara County Sheriff's deputies were called to a Somerset farm on Saturday for a report of suspicious pig death.

The farmer said his roughly 4-year-old pure bred pig — weighing between 600 and 700 pounds — has been reluctant to stay in his pasture/barn area on Carmen Road and has been the source of several complaints to the sheriff's office. On Friday, the pig was running loose again and the farmer was able to wrangle it back home.

On Saturday, the farmer discovered the pig dead in its pasture. When he checked the animal, he found blood in its mouth and believes that someone may have poisoned the pig because it is constantly out of its pasture causing damage.

A deputy surmised the pig could have eaten something while loose that led to his death. A check of accidents in the area turned up nothing.

The farmer said a veterinarian was going to take tissue and organ samples to conduct tests. The deputy said he'd wait to hear from the vet before proceeding with the case.
