Newfane woman severely injured by her dogs

A Newfane woman was hospitalized with wounds to her hands and wrists while trying to separate two fighting dogs in her home Tuesday morning.

Niagara County Sheriff's deputies were called to a Charles Street home about 8:30 a.m. Tuesday for a report of a woman bitten by a dog suffering uncontrollable bleeding.

When they arrived, they found a 48-year-old woman in a bathroom lying in a very large pool of blood with a towel wrapped around her right calf. She told them she was very cold and having trouble speaking.

Deputies applied pressure dressing to the woman's wounds while waiting for an ambulance to arrive. The woman had suffered several lacerations to both her hands and wrists, a puncture wound to her right thigh and one puncture wound to her calf. She was then taken to a local hospital for treatment.

In addition to the two fighting dogs, the breed of which was not provided, deputies noted there were three or four beagles in the home, as well as two "very small children."

Deputies also said the home was very dirty with a strong odor of dog feces, garbage piled on the table and "a good many uncleaned dishes on the kitchen counter and sink area." Also, in the front room, a hole had been cut into the ceiling with a ladder ascending into the hole. Deputies were told the attic area was being used as a living space.

Child protection services were contacted due to the condition of the home and the dogs. The Newfane dog control officer was also called in to deal with the dogs.

Charges in the case are also pending.
