Lockport man faces SAFE Act violation

A Town of Lockport town man was charged with violating the New York SAFE Act early Saturday.

A city police officer cited Paul A. Wojdan, 26, 1224 Parkwood Drive, for unlawful possession of an ammunition feeding device after looking over Wojdan's permitted handgun in the course of a traffic stop about 12:30 a.m. Saturday.

According to Lockport Police Department, the officer initiated the stop on a vehicle driven by Tanisha D. White, also of 1224 Parkwood Drive, after radar measured it traveling 44 mph on South Transit Street south of Willow Street. The speed limit is 30 mph in the city.

White did not comply with the stop directive until she had entered the town, stopping her vehicle on South Transit Road near Strauss Road, the officer reported.

The officer spoke with White and Wojdan and learned that Wojdan's semi-automatic handgun was in the vehicle glove box. The gun, for which Wojdan has a permit, was found in a holster with 10 9mm rounds of ammunition in the magazine, the officer reported.

With passage of the state Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act of 2013, it's not legal to possess an ammunition feeding device that can accept more than seven rounds.

Possessing said device anywhere other than one's home is a misdemeanor, and the prescribed penalty upon conviction is a $200 fine and/or six months' imprisonment, according to the law.

Wojdan was held on $250 police bail pending arraignment Wednesday in City Court.

White received several Vehicle and Traffic Law citations, the officer reported.
