An unidentified man and woman were taken to ECMC via Mercy Flight Wednesday night after the motorcycle they were riding on crashed into a van that police say turned into their path.
According to the Niagara County Sheriff's Office, police received multiple 911 calls reporting the accident at the intersection of South Transit and Rapids roads in the Town of Lockport shortly after 7 p.m. Wednesday.
EMS and police were immediately dispatched to the scene. The motorcycle driver and passenger were transported by Rural Metro Ambulance to the North Buffalo Suburban Airport, 6700 South Transit Road, where they were transferred to Mercy Flight and flown to the Erie County Medical Center for treatment.
As of late Wednesday night, the male was listed in critical condition, while no condition was listed for the female. NCSO said, however, that she was concious and alert. The minivan was operated by a female driver who was treated at the scene and released.
Initial accident investigation by NCSO indicates that the motorcycle was northbound on South Transit Road, when the minivan, which was at the Rapids Road intersection and facing south, turned in front of the motorcycle. The motorcycle struck the passenger side of the minivan and the driver and passenger of the motorcycle were ejected from the motorcycle.
The accident remains under investigation by the Niagara County Sheriff's Office Accident Investigation Unit. No charges were filed at this time. Sheriff Voutour was at the scene and assisted with the initial investigation. Wendelville, Rapids and South Lockport Fire Companies assisted at the scene. The names of the people involved in the accident were not released Wednesday night.
