Niagara County Sheriff's deputies were called to Beach Street about 11 p.m. Thursday for a report of a truck nearly driving into Lake Ontario.

Upon arrival, the deputy found a group of people standing around a 2011 Ford Ranger trying to free it from the beach area. A witness had reported the truck drove from a parking area on Beach Street toward the lake but got stuck.

The deputy found the driver of the truck, Charles R. Hawk, 52, 5771 W. Main St., who said he had just been heading home. The deputy noted that Hawk appeared unsteady on his feet and other signs of intoxication.

After a set of field sobriety tests were conducted, Hawk was taken into custody and charged with DWI, a driver's license restriction violation and unlawful possession of marijuana. He refused to submit to a chemical test.
