Grandmother's watchful eye puts air base personnel on alert

Niagara County Sheriff's deputies were called to the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station on Tuesday for a report of a suspicious car that had been continually been passing by a gate at the base very slowly.

An agent with the Office of Special Investigations at the base told the deputy it was reported to him by base staff that since Sept. 11 a blue hatchback has passed slowly by the base's fuel gate on Walmore Road, then turn around in front of the airbase and leave in the direction it came from. It happens about noon every day. The car came by a few times on Tuesday and did the same thing and base personnel made the decision to call sheriff's deputies. The agent provided the deputy with the car's registration, registered owner, her date of birth and her address on Walck Road.

The deputy drove out to Walck Road and met up with the women. Asked about her driving down Walmore Road, the woman told the deputy she has a granddaughter who lives in a Walmore Road apartment complex and she's been driving by it for the past month or so to check up on her. After passing the apartment complex, she said she makes a u-turn near the base's entrance.

Told about the suspicious car complaint from base staff, the deputy said the woman was very apologetic and appeared on the verge of tears. She said she'll find another place to turn around in from now on.
