Newfane man setting up hunting stand killed in apparent fall from tree

The Niagara County Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of a Newfane man found dead after reportedly falling from a tree Monday night.

Sheriff's officials were alerted about 7:30 p.m. that the unidentified man had fallen from a tree and was severely injured.

The man had gone into the woods east of Coomer Road to set up a tree stand for hunting. After failing to return for several hours, two of his friends went into the woods looking for him. They found him at the base of a tree suffering undisclosed injuries and called 911.

Dispatchers used GPS tracking from the cell phone to direct sheriff's deputies and firefighters from Miller Hose and Wrights Corners to the scene.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The death appears accidental, according to a release from the sheriff's office, but is being investigated by the sheriff's criminal division.
