Woman dies in apartment fire
Officials say a woman has died after a fast-moving fire trapped her in her basement apartment.
Grand Island Fire Chief Matt Osinski tells media outlets the fire started around 9 p.m. Saturday in the victim's basement apartment of the Grand Court Apartments in Grand Island. Police tried to get to her but were unable to get through the flames and smoke.
Residents of an apartment above the woman's said they heard her scream for help, but they were unable to break through her steel-reinforced door.
The victim's identity hasn't been released yet.
Firefighters from several companies fought the flames in the six-unit, three-floor apartment complex.
Teens busted after getting truck stuck in field
Niagara County Sheriff's deputies were called to the area of 4327 Upper Mountain Road about 11:55 p.m. Saturday for a report of a vehicle that drove through a yard and was stuck in a field.
An arriving deputy said he arrived to find a pickup in stuck in the field with two teens standing nearby. While talking to the teens, the deputy noticed that the pickup had no license plates to which one of the teens — Lucas R. Coleman, 18, Erica Lane, Lockport — explained he had been painting the bumper and forgot to put them back on. The plates were found under the front side passenger seat.
In the tool box of the truck, deputies found 23 cans of Coors Light beer and a bottle of Jack Daniel's'.
Coleman was charged with criminal mischief (intent to damage property), a license plate violation and underage possession of alcohol.
Steven F. Mangold, 19, 4870 Upper Mountain Road, Lockport, was charged with underage possession of alcohol.
A tow truck was called in to pull the pickup out of the field.
