Further charges for county court escapee

Niagara Gazette — With injuries now reported to two state court officers, the Niagara Falls man who fled the Niagara County Courthouse on Thursday faces two charges of second-degree assault.

Tarelle T. Haugabook, 20, 1961 Welch Ave., Apt. 2 was charged with two counts of second-degree assault, resisting arrest, second-degree obstruction of governmental administration and second-degree escape. He was arraigned before City Court Justice William Watson.

State Court Officer Nicole Gaiser suffered an ankle injury and John Rodgers had an arm injury. According to the police report, Rodgers sustained an injury to his arm during the altercation outside the elevator at the courthouse. Gaiser sustained an ankle injury during the arrest.

Haugabook was being sentenced by Supreme Court Justice Richard C. Kloch when the prisoner bolted at 2:30 p.m. Police and court officers gave chase and caught up with Haugabook on Ontario Street near the Bond House about 10 minutes later

Haugabook, whose hands were cuffed behind his back during the escape, was taken to Lockport Police Headquarters. The injured court officers were taken to Eastern Niagara Hospital.

Rodgers had escorted Haugabook out of court and was waiting for the elevator when he broke free.
