FIRE CALLS: Niagara Falls fire reports published Feb. 9

For the period of Jan. 28 to Feb. 3, the Niagara Falls Fire Department responded to 107 calls. The total number of service calls to date in 2013 is 573.

FIRE: On Jan. 28, Engine 7 and Truck 2 responded at 6:22 a.m. to a vehicle fire in the 6400 block of Niagara Falls Boulevard. A ruptured brake line on a 2005 Chevy truck sprayed fluid onto the hot engine and caused the fire. Damage was estimated at $3,500.

FIRE: On Jan. 28, another vehicle fire occurred at 10:04 p.m. in the 1100 block of Grove Avenue. The crew from Engine 3, consisting of Capt. Mike Zambotti and Firefighters Risky Sanabria, Chris Finitz, and Adam Farinas found a 2002 Jeep Cherokee that had earlier been reported stolen and was now fully involved in fire in the passenger compartment. The crew was able to quickly put out the fire, which is considered an arson and remains under investigation. Three men were observed leaving the vehicle shortly before the fire and are considered suspects. Damage is pegged at $5,000.

INCIDENT: on Jan. 30, Platoon 3 was sent at 4:46 p.m. to the Rainbow Mall parking ramp for a large water leak. A 4-inch pipe broke, flooding a large area. Crews remained on the scene for over three hours, diverting the water until the Water Board could repair the pipe. Due to the recent freeze/ thaw cycle in the weather, the Falls Fire Department has responded to many burst pipe situations involving sprinkler systems in commercial structures in the last few weeks.

FIRE: On Jan. 31, Platoon 2 was dispatched at 11:30 p.m. to a structure fire in an apartment complex in the 1700 block of Lafayette Avenue. The fire had started in a first-floor apartment, due to careless smoking, and spread to adjacent apartments before firefighters could extinguish it. Three apartments were damaged and seven residents received temporary living arrangements via the Red Cross. Damage to the building and contents was listed at $60,000.
