Woman caught taking items from grave sites at Lockport cemetery

A Niagara County Sheriff's deputy on patrol about 10:30 a.m. Sunday was flagged down at Cold Springs Cemetery where a witness said a woman was taking items from grave sites.

The woman was pointed out and the deputy said she was highly irrational, disorientated and appeared sad when he approached her. She said she knew why he was there and said she had taken things off of grave sites. "I feel like they left this stuff here for me," she told the deputy.

The woman then told the deputy the people in the cemetery were here family and when he asked if she knew them when they were alive, she replied, "No, but I do now."

The woman continued to make strange statements to the deputy. When he looked into the backseat of her nearby car, he saw numerous items normally left at grave sites and she admitted to taking the items. The deputy attempted to have the woman return the items to their proper sites but she said it would take too long. Items in the car included real and plastic flowers, plastic birds, ceramic outdoor religious items, a garden gnome and other items.

The items were removed from the car and given to cemetery staff. The deputy said he'd follow up when owners of the items could be contacted.

An ambulance was called in to bring the woman in for a mental evaluation and the deputy also was able to contact her son, who came out to the cemetery to get his mother's car and a dog she had with her.
