Deputy apprehends suspect fleeing Lewiston armed robbery

A Niagara County Sheriff's deputy responding to an armed robbery at a convenience store on the 2900 block of Saunders Settlement Road was able to quickly find the suspect early Wednesday morning.

A sheriff's deputy said he was on patrol on Shawnee Road about 2 a.m. when he received a call  about the robbery — a clerk said a man wielding a knife had made off with $200. The dispatcher also provided a description of the suspect, his vehicle — a small black car — and a direction of travel.

Now on Lockport Road, the deputy spotted a small black car near Nash Road and pulled it over.

While the car actually turned out to be blue, the driver matched a description of the suspect and the deputy noted he was dripping with sweat and his hands were shaking heavily.

When asked where he was coming from, the man told police he was coming from a friend's house in the Falls. He also said he was sweating because it was hot out. He was identified as Danny Merritt.

Deputies found no weapon on him and found $80 in cash in his left pocket. When asked if deputies could search his vehicle, Merritt responded, "There's nothing in there, I don't know what you're looking for."

Merritt was brought back to the convenience store where the clerk positively identified him.

Merritt, 32, 5403 Murphy Road, was eventually charged with first-degree robbery.

The Town of Lewiston Police Department is handling the investigation.
