Falls man fleeing from police dies after crash

A Falls man died of injuries suffered in a car crash following a high-speed chase early Sunday morning on Niagara Falls Boulevard.

Lewis R. Worrells, 30, of Niagara Falls, died at Erie County Medical Center about 7:30 a.m. Sunday.

New York State Police report they were monitoring a radio transmission from Falls police regarding a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed down the Boulevard with no headlights. State police say a Falls patrol car had to take evasive action to avoid being hit by the speeding car.

A state trooper saw the car, driven by Worrells run a flashing red stop light at 74th and the Boulevard and activated their emergency lights and began chasing the car.

The trooper said Worrells was traveling at a high rate of speed and rear-ended another vehicle near the intersection of 56th Street and the Boulevard.

The operator of the second vehicle was taken to Memorial Medical Center where they refused medical treatment.

An investigation is continuing by members of the State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit and the Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
