Big losses for tourists after cars broken into while parked in Falls

Two families, one from Texas and the other South Carolina, reported thousands of dollars in losses from separate car break-ins Sunday downtown.

A Falls police officer reported he was flagged down at Buffalo Avenue and Third Street about 1 p.m. by a Texas man.

The man reported he had parked his '07 Honda in the area about 12:15 p.m. and his family had walked over to see the falls. They returned 45 minutes later to find the vehicle's front and rear windows smashed out and two bags missing.

Inside the bags, the man said was an iPad 2, iPod Touch, a camera, three computer hard drives, a wireless Blue Tooth speaker, a credit card, a birth certificate, driver's license and all four of the family's passports.

The estimated loss was well over $2,000 for the items, police said.

The Texas man said the iPads could be tracked through GPS but he was unsuccessful in doing so.

While the Texas man was filing the report, his credit card company called stating someone had made several purchases in the Buffalo area. The company was unable to give specific amours or locations at the time of the report.

Several hours later on Sunday, a South Carolina man told police he and his family parked their '01 Chevy Suburban in the parking lot of a restaurant on the 400 block of Main Street about 8 p.m. to have dinner.

When they returned to the vehicle about 9:30 p.m., they found a front door lock broken and a laptop, two iPads and a Kindle device gone from the vehicle.

The estimated loss is $1,900 for the items. It was unclear how much damage was caused to the Suburban.
