COPS NOTEBOOK: Better late than never?

If I had a dollar for every police report I’ve seen in my life that made me go “Hmmm?,” I’d be rich and retired.

That’s because, on an almost weekly basis, I see everything from head scratchers to candidates for the “Dumbest Criminal” Award.

This week’s head scratcher comes from a 53-year-old woman, who showed up at police headquarters looking to report some vandalism to her home. The woman told an officer that someone had damaged the stairs leading to her back porch.

Also damaged was a garbage can, some siding on the house, a chair on the porch and a fence around her yard. The woman said it appeared the damage was caused by an ax.

When the officer asked about the date and time of the vandalism, the woman told him between 3 and 11:51 p.m. Feb. 1. That’s Feb. 1, 2010, to be exact.

Reporting an act of vandalism four months after it happened seems odd enough, but reporting it three years and four months after it happened does lead to an obvious question.

What took her so long?

Not surprisingly, the officer taking the report was curious about that as well. So he asked.

The woman told him she was “informed she had up to five years to make a complaint” and “three years later, she felt it would be a good time to file the report.”

Needless to say, no evidence of the vandalism exists anymore and the woman has no idea who a suspect might be.

Personally, I’d be about as prompt in investigating this complaint as the victim was in filing it. Meaning, check back with me in 2016.

Great day for a run

I’m not a motorcycle rider, but folks I know who do ride rave about the yearly Firefighters Toy Fund Motorcycle Run.
