Break-ins at several vacant homes reported by Texas bank contractor

A contractor working at three vacant homes in the city on behalf of a Texas bank reported Tuesday they had been broken into and burglarized.

In all two of the three instances, the man had discovered the break-ins and damage weeks and months before reporting it to police.

The man said he arrived at a home on the 500 block of Sixth Street on Monday and found all exterior doors kicked in and copper missing from inside the structure. The man didn’t know how long the home had been vacant or when the damage had been done. About $2,000 in damage was done to the building and about $10,000 in copper was taken.

The man also reported he found another home on the 100 block of 13th Street broken into on June 4. He said several items, including a kitchen sink and baseboard heaters. An amount of copper was also taken. The man had no idea when the break-in occurred. Police noted the home’s filthy condition.

Finally, the man said he went to a vacant home on the 700 Spruce Avenue on April 27 and found copper piping, radiators and the hot water tank taken from the home. He had no idea when the thefts occurred. Police noted again that the inside of the vacant home was filthy.
