Search for missing man called off by state park police

Niagara Gazette — State Park Police have ended their search for a missing man in the Niagara Gorge.

Authorities had been searching the gorge for any sign of a 23-year-old man who was reported missing on Wednesday.

Douglas Vaillancourt of North Tonawanda was reported missing when he didn't show up Wednesday morning for his part-time job with the U.S. Postal Service in the Falls.

State Park Police say Thursday that a search of the gorge was started after his car was found in a parking lot at Niagara Falls State Park. Police say there's no indication that went into the Niagara River above the falls.

Police searched the gorge from the ground and the air Wednesday and Thursday but didn't locate him.

A State Park Police official said Thursday night they've ended their search and turned the matter back over to North Tonawanda police.
