Victims in Tonawanda bike collisions identified

Niagara Gazette — Town of Tonawanda police have identified the 12-year-old bicyclist who died last week after he was hit by a car as Imani Gilbert.

Gilbert, of the Town of Tonawanda, was crossing Delaware Road at Sheridan Drive at the time of the accident Thursday. An unidentified female driver, who was attempting to make a left from southbound Delaware onto Sheridan, hit the boy at 5:01 p.m. She was driving a Pontiac Vibe and had a green arrow, police said.

“The boy became trapped under the car,” Lt. Nick Bado said. “A group of bystanders, including a detective and a fire chief, were able to get the boy out.”

The boy, who was not wearing a helmet, was transported to Women and Children's Hospital of Buffalo after the accident and died overnight, police said.

Bado said an autopsy determined that the boy died of blunt force trauma to a number of vital areas. The accident investigation is still under way, he said.

The Ken-Ton School District confirmed that the boy was an incoming eighth-grader at Herbert Hoover Middle School.

Police also identified the 15-year-old bicyclist who was struck on Niagara Falls Boulevard last week as Jacob Murphy, also of the town. He remains in critical condition at Women and Children's Hospital.

Rachel Tomasik-Lobaugh, a Tonawanda resident, was heading southbound on Niagara Falls Boulevard Monday at 4:05 p.m. when her SUV collided with the teen near the intersection of Greenhaven Terrace.

"Accident investigators have also established that no alcohol, drugs or cell phone use were involved," Bado said in a statement. "Other evidence is still being evaluated before a final conclusion can be determined."
