North Tonawanda man facing two DWI-related felonies after traffic stop

A North Tonawanda man who tried to run from police after a traffic stop early Sunday morning — and who spent a year in jail on a DWI conviction — faces two DWI-related felony charges.

A deputy said he while on patrol on Niagara Falls Boulevard about 1:45 a.m. he tried to pull over a white Pontiac Grand Am that was traveling westbound. The car continued on the Boulevard, eventually making a right turn onto Ruie Road. The driver, identified as Daniel S. Couturiaux, 42, 909 Deerfield Drive, North Tonawanda, eventually pulled over and he then moved from the driver's seat into the passenger seat. Couturiaux then jumped out the front door and began running into a residential area. He was caught by deputies after a short chase.

Deputies said Couturiaux appeared intoxicated and failed one field sobriety test before refusing to do any more. He refused to take a breath test.

After being charged, a computer check showed that Couturiaux's driver's license was revoked and had been revoked or suspended 19 times. He also had two previous DWI convictions in the past 10 years and served a year in jail in 2005 for a DWI conviction, the report said.

Couturiaux was charged with felony DWI, felony first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation, DWI and several vehicle and traffic infractions.
