Amherst man caught selling cigarettes out of trunk of car at state fair

An Amherst man has been arrested near Albany after he was caught selling cigarettes and drugs from the trunk of his car during the state fair.

James T. Scherer Jr., 66, 4801 North Bailey Ave., has been charged with felony fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, fourth-degree criminal sale of marijuana and possession/transportation of unstamped cigarettes, a felony charge.

State Police Investigator Richard Dix said he noticed Scherer selling cigarettes from the trunk of his car while parked near the Infield Restaurant at the New York State Fair.

After he was arrested, investigators seized 91 cartons of untaxed cigarettes, 16 grams of marijuana, 0.6 grams of cocaine and more than $2,000.

Scherer was arraigned in the Town of Geddes and remanded to Onondaga County Justice Center in lieu of $2,500 bail.
