Bicyclist hit by car and killed in Wheatfield

 
A 67-year-old bicyclist was struck by a car and killed about 10 p.m. Saturday on Lockport Road, near Walmore Road.
A 17-year-old female was driving the vehicle that struck the bicyclist. She was not injured.
The bicyclist, Herbert Luffman of Lockport Road, was taken to Mount St. Mary’s Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The sheriff’s office did not release the name of the driver. No charges have been filed.

Man charged with sparking large grass fire

 
An Appleton man was arrested following a large grass fire off of Crosby Road in the Town of Lockport Saturday afternoon.
Rapids Fire Chief Barry Kobran said his fire company first responded to the blaze about 3:30 p.m. but it quickly grew very large, requiring multiple fire agencies to respond. He said the fire burned about 3 acres of land.
Peter Johnson, 28, of Hess Road in Appleton, told Niagara County Sheriff’s deputies he had intended to start a small bonfire with his family but the wind got hold of the flames and it quickly got out of control.
Johnson was charged with open burning.

• BURGLARY: Police are investigating a reported burglary which happened between 7 p.m. Thursday and 8:11 p.m. Friday at a residence in the 2000 block of 16th Street. The daughter of the victim, a 53-year-old woman, told officers she checks the residence every day and when she arrived Friday, she found the dining room window shattered. She checked the residence and noticed a Nintendo Wii gaming system missing from its regular location. She also noticed two cell phones were missing, as well as assorted jewelry. The daughter said damages and losses total about $900, not including the jewelry.
