Fundraiser money stolen in Lockport

Niagara Gazette — LOCKPORT — Police are investigating the report that cash receipts from a benefit were stolen on April 8 from a home on Walnut Street.

The benefit for Lee and Rose Rosselli was held on April 6 and the theft occurred on April 7, according to Matt Rosselli who organized the benefit for his parents.

Lee, 65, and Rose, 50, were seriously injured in a motorcycle accident on South Transit Road in October and were transferred by Mercy Flight to Erie County Medical Center where they were hospitalized for more than six months.

According to Matt Rosselli, the benefit raised $4,000. About $3,500 in cash was stolen along with two televisions, a playstation and Xbox, The assorted checks for about $500 were left behind. One of the 30 checks came from a judges and police organization.

"A police investigation is going on. We have a case and we are looking into it," Detective Lt. Scott Seekins said Thursday. "We believe it is not a random crime."

The break-in occured between 7 and 11 p.m. The door was kicked in at the house and police believe the person who committed the crime knew that the money was in the house. "Somebody knew and the pool of individuals is limited," Seekins said.

Detective Kevin Schrader is in charge of the investigation and anyone with information is asked to call 439-6722.

"Somebody knew it was there," Matt Rosselli said. "I really hope they catch them. I worked six months doing the benefit. We ended up negative."

Lee Rosselli, the driver of the motorcycle, lost one of his legs and suffered a broken back as a result of the SUV-motorcycle collision Oct. 25 in front of Valu Home Center plaza. Rose Rosselli, the passenger, suffered a traumatic brain injury. Each had several surgeries.
