Fatal Lewiston fire being investigated

LEWISTON —

An elderly man was found dead after an early morning house fire on Lower River Road Sunday.

The Niagara County Sheriff's Office says it received a call about 2:15 a.m. of a house fire at 4702 Lower River Road. The caller said an elderly man was possibly still inside the home.

Lewiston police and Sheriff's deputies arrived on the scene and attempted to enter the structure several times but were unsuccessful due to heavy smoke.

Lewiston No. 1 Fire Department responded to the scene with assistance from Upper Mountain, Youngstown, Sanborn and Ransomville fire companies to extinguish the fire.

The elderly man was found dead inside the home.

The structure appears to be a total loss.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.

The name of the man is being withheld pending notification of his family.
